to unemployment benefits for two million people could be on the way because of the fiscal cliff, congress, though, hey, about to get a raise. part of an executive order that president obama issued which ends a pay freeze for federal workers. their salaries, yeah, they'll if up by half a percent after march 27. that's an extra $900 before taxes. currently members of congress make $174,000 a year except for leaders who make a little more. the last time there was a pay raise was 2009. >>> there is one thing the senate has agreed on, getting aid to victims of superstorm sandy. by a 61-33 vote the chamber passed a measure offering $60 billion in help. it heads to the house which must approve the bill by thursday or else the process to consider the money has to start all over again. at least 113 people were killed when superstorm sandy hit in late october. the governors of new york and new jersey, the hardest hit states, have estimated damages at more than $78 billion. >>> and turning to weather. even though winter is just over a week old, millions of americans probably can't wait for spring to arrive.

think congress can pull off some sort of fiscal cliff compromise before major economic fallout sets in, there's one thing you need to be prepared for, for many of you, your paycheck will go down in the new year. here's why. the payroll tax was cut by two percentage points over the last two years to give the economy a little nudge. experts say that tax holiday is coming to an end and the small tax break adds up big over the course of a year. the center on budget and policy priorities says it's about $100 billion that will come out of our paychecks and go to the tax man. goldman sachs says that ending the tax holiday would shave 0.6 percentage points off economic growth next year which is not predicted to be all that strong anyway and here's the impact on you. let's say you make $50,000 a year, that's an extra $20 out of every single paycheck every week. doesn't seem like a lot of money but when you do the math, it sure adds up. that's $1000 you won't be taking home in 2013. jessica doyle, 9 news now. >>> angry, frustrated and confused, that's how many americans say they are feeling as w

are on the fiscal cliff, another deadline is approaching, the milk cliff. it's part of a farm bill with as much as $35 billion in cuts. if the bill doesn't make it through congress before the end of the year, the government will be forced to find vast qualities of milk under the trueman era law and that could send consumer milk prices as high as $6 to $8 a gallon because the government would be obligated to pay twice the wholesale rate under the 1949 rule. the farmers would sell their milk to the government first and prompting a shortage in commercial supplies spiking the price consumers pay. >> the farm bill is like the low-hanging ornament on the congressional christmas tree that if they just embrace it, they can automatically come up with tips of billions of dollars in budget savings. >> reporter: the problem is the bill's stuck in the house and there appears to be no political will to move it forward. agriculture secretary tom vilsack said as a precaution, his department is preparing for the laws to take affect. >> this is a bad outcome. let me be very clear about this. i don't think we sho
